The Griffin — Overview
The Griffin is one of Dragon's Dogma's most iconic and challenging encounters. This massive eagle-lion hybrid first appears on the road between Gran Soren and the Estan Plains, and it will reappear in multiple story-related battles throughout the game. Unlike many enemies that rely on brute force, the Griffin combines aerial mobility with devastating swooping attacks, making it a genuine test of your party's coordination and vocation abilities.
Griffin Weaknesses
Understanding the Griffin's elemental and physical vulnerabilities is key to a fast, efficient kill:
- Ice (Primary Weakness) — Ice spells and ice-enchanted weapons deal increased damage. Mages and Sorcerers should equip Frigor or High Frigor.
- Lightning (Secondary) — Lightning is also effective and more broadly useful if your Mage already runs lightning spells.
- Weak Points — The head and wing joints take significantly more damage than the body. Focus strikes here whenever the Griffin lands.
- Fire Resistance — Do not bother with fire-based skills or weapons; the Griffin resists fire strongly.
Attack Patterns and How to Counter Them
Phase 1 — Aerial Dominance
The Griffin begins most fights in the air, circling and diving. During this phase:
- Swooping Grab — It will attempt to grab a party member and carry them into the air. Counter with high-damage burst attacks as it approaches, or use ranged skills to interrupt the lunge.
- Wind Blast — A wing-buffet attack that sends players flying. Stay crouched or maintain heavy stamina guard with a Fighter.
- Dive Bomb — A fast plunging attack. Dodge to the side rather than backward, as the hitbox extends in the direction of travel.
Tip: Use Strider's Cloaking Arrow or a Ranger's Fivefold Flurry during aerial phases to keep up pressure from range.
Phase 2 — Grounded Combat
After taking sufficient damage, the Griffin will land to recover stamina. This is your most important damage window:
- Immediately pile onto the head with your strongest attacks.
- Climbers should mount the back and target the wing joints — destroying them limits future aerial ability.
- Your Mage Pawn should cast High Frigor to freeze the Griffin's legs, extending the grounded window.
Phase 3 — Desperation Attacks
Below roughly 30% health, the Griffin becomes more aggressive with faster combos and more frequent aerial retreats. Keep your health above half during this phase — the Thunderclap wing slam can kill a low-health character in one hit.
Recommended Party Setup
| Slot | Vocation | Key Skills |
|---|---|---|
| Arisen | Strider or Fighter | Blink Strike, Cutting Wind, or Fivefold Flurry |
| Main Pawn | Mage | High Frigor, Anodyne (healing), Attunement |
| Hired Pawn 1 | Sorcerer | High Gicel (ice storm) |
| Hired Pawn 2 | Strider | Tenfold Flurry (ranged aerial damage) |
Gear Recommendations
- Equip Chilling Razors or any ice-affinity weapon on melee combatants.
- Ensure your Mage carries enough Mage Spells to sustain the fight — Anodyne is non-negotiable for party healing during phase transitions.
- Stock Lantern Oil if fighting the nighttime Griffin encounter — visibility matters when it circles above you.
Rewards for Defeating the Griffin
The Griffin drops valuable crafting materials including Griffin Talons, Griffin Feathers, and occasionally Wing Scales. These materials are used to craft and enhance several mid-to-late-game armor pieces. Completing the Griffin-related escort quest also unlocks a significant amount of Rift Crystal currency.
